Overview

Health and social care is one of the largest and most exciting industries in the country. Integral to making sure that we’re healthy, happy, and cared for when things go wrong, there are over 350 dedicated and varied careers available. Primary care sits at the heart of care - providing access for people in the community to receive essential care and support that helps address any issues quickly.

Springpod and Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent Integrated Care System have partnered up to provide you with an insight into the world of primary care careers through a fantastic programme that will help you prepare for taking your first steps into this area of care.

What's included

GPs, nurses, pharmacists - they’re all roles that we’ve seen and heard of before. But, there’s much more to them than you realise - and much more to primary care, too! You’ll discover the diverse range of careers available, and gain an understanding of exactly which skills are needed within care careers.

You’ll get hands-on, doing a series of quizzes and activities. Complete with virtual webinars, this programme will help build your understanding of primary care and the role you could play in its future!

Introduction to health and care

Ready to dive into the exciting world of primary care? Learn how health and care professionals play a crucial role in primary care. Explore specialised areas of care, from medical interventions to holistic support systems. Gain insights into the pivotal roles that power primary care settings and how integrated care systems work to provide quality care in the region.

GPs

Think you know everything you need to know about GPs? Think again! We’ll help you understand how integral GPs are within primary care settings, and you’ll gain a real understanding of the roles, responsibilities, and pathways on offer! You'll have loads of fun with interactive exercises and quizzes that’ll level up your GP knowledge!

Nursing

Get to grips with how the nursing team provides world-class care to patients in the region. Understand the diversity of options available - including key roles such as healthcare assistance and nursing associates - and delve into activities and quizzes to deepen your understanding!

Allied Health Professions and additional roles

Time to get closer to allied health professions! Learn about the diverse roles available, and explore roles such as physiotherapists, podiatrists, dietitians, and paramedics. You’ll understand how they support primary care services, and you’ll connect with real professionals in webinars.

Pharmacy

We’ll help you discover the diverse world of pharmacy roles, including technicians, assistants, and more! You’ll engage in practical activities that put you in a pharmacist’s shoes, and you’ll uncover just how important pharmacy roles are for people in the community.

Non-Clinical roles

Primary care isn’t just always about clinical roles! In this module, expand your horizons beyond what you’ve previously thought about health and care. Discover the diverse roles available in non-clinical positions, from vital administration to management, digital professions, and more! Plus, you’ll have activities that’ll check that you know your stuff!

What does the application process involve?

Applying for a place is simple. If you’re applying as an individual student, you’ll need to provide your full name and email address, set up a password, confirm you’re over the age of 13 and agree to our terms and conditions.

When will I hear if my application has been successful?

You will be able to access the programme from your dashboard on the day it goes live.

Is there a cost to take part?

No! This is a completely free programme for young people and schools to take part in.

Will I receive a certificate on completion of the programme?

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.

How can I enter a career in health and social care?

The health and social care sector has lots of different roles, and with it, lots of pathways that you can pursue to find your dream career.

From T-Levels to Apprenticeships, and even Volunteering, there are a lot of opportunities for you to gain an insight into the world of health and care, and take your first steps in your dream career.

What is a T-Level?

T Levels are 2-year courses designed for young people aged between 16-19 years.

They are equivalent to 3 A Levels and have been developed in partnership with employers and education providers. T Levels aim to prepare students for further or higher education, skilled employment, or an apprenticeship.

T Levels include a dual approach of classroom learning and on-the-job experience. The qualification requires a 45-day placement, which could be in one technical setting or a rotation, depending on the course of study.

The T Levels course includes core theory, concepts, skills, and knowledge needed for a career in the chosen sector.

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain‘on the job’ experience, combined with studying for a formal qualification, all while earning a wage.

Apprenticeships can range from 12 months to 5 years, giving you sufficient time to learn new skills and gain knowledge in the area you see yourself in the future. You can do an apprenticeship in a wide range of areas, from healthcare workers, to administrators or radiology.

As an Integrated Care System, we offer rotational apprenticeship schemes that gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills in a range of health and care settings. This will provide experience and competencies that will be beneficial when you are looking for permanent employment or to enable you to progress along your chosen career pathway.

Why is volunteering beneficial?

There are lots of different benefits to volunteering. By volunteering, you can:

  • Gain and develop skills, experience, and practical insights
  • Explore different career paths
  • Meet new people
  • Boost confidence
  • Improve emotional wellbeing

We work closely with local partners VAST and Support Staffordshire who provide volunteer brokerage across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. They have a really broad range of volunteering opportunities with local community organisations and within health and care, so will be happy to help find the right role for you.

VAST

VAST is a registered charity, providing specialist services to the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire.

Support Staffordshire

Support Staffordshire is the largest independent voice VCSE in Staffordshire.

How can I boost my employability?
