Overview

Health and social care is one of the largest and most exciting industries in the country. Integral to making sure that we’re healthy, happy, and cared for when things go wrong, there are over 350 dedicated and varied careers available. Increasingly, more roles have begun to focus on providing mental health care and support.

Springpod and Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent ICS have partnered up to provide you with an insight into the world of mental health careers through a fantastic programme that will help you prepare for taking your first steps into this area of care.

What's included

This programme will cover everything from an introduction to the different roles that provide mental health support, to an insight into the distinct responsibilities, working lives, and progression opportunities available in this vital area of care. Covering roles within psychiatry, nursing, allied health professions and mental health services, this programme will give you an understanding of the possibilities available to you.

You’ll have the chance to take part in some great quizzes and amazing activities, and you’ll even have the chance to see live procedures and speak to leading industry experts along the way!

Introduction to Health and Social Care

We’re all in some way a little familiar with the health and social care sector, but how much do you really know about it? As a system that we all rely on in our time of need, it’s pretty vital! This module will help explain the sector, making everything a little clearer - covering everything from skills and values needed for these careers, routes into the health system, and even an insight into the many benefits of working in health and social care!

Mental Health and Common Conditions

Anyone can experience problems with their mental health, and there can be lots of different ways this happens. Some of you may have experienced these too. But, how much do you know about different mental health conditions? This module will introduce you to mental health conditions and treatments, alongside some of the services based within Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent that play a part in helping individuals.

Mental Health Doctors: Psychiatry

Psychiatrists are probably some of the most recognisable roles in mental health, but more often than not, there’s lots of different misconceptions about them! So, how do you separate fact from fiction? That’s where this module comes to the rescue! Not only will the module explore what psychiatry is and the different roles available, it’ll also showcase the different specialisms and give you the lowdown on the key skills you’ll need to succeed!

Mental Health Nurses

The nursing team is the foundation of health and social care, and a role that we all admire and are thankful for in times of need. In this module, we’ll cover an introduction to mental health nursing, as well as showing you the variety of roles out there for people who truly care about caring for others.

Mental Health Support Roles

In this module, we’ll take a closer look at mental health support roles, and give you an insight into how every day is an opportunity to make a difference in someone’s mental health journey.

Psychological Professionals: Psychology & Psychotherapy

You’ve probably come across psychology, but what about psychotherapy? Well, this module will explain all! By providing you with the latest information on these core areas of mental health care and support, you’ll be equipped with the best knowledge for a career helping others!

Allied Health Professionals in Mental Health

Have you ever taken the time to think about how many possibilities are available within health and social care? You might be surprised about how many expert roles are available, but you’ll be prepared after this module! Here, we’ll introduce you to the variety found in the allied health professions, and introduce you to how some of these roles play an invaluable role in mental health support!

Mental Health in Children and Young People

Anyone can experience mental health problems, at any age. Children’s mental health services are a core part of mental health support, and they’ll be at the forefront of helping children and young people through difficult times. This module will introduce the service and highlight some of the key roles that help young people during some incredibly difficult periods.

What does the application process involve?

Applying for a place is simple. If you’re applying as an individual student, you’ll need to provide your full name and email address, set up a password, confirm you’re over the age of 13 and agree to our terms and conditions.

When will I hear if my application has been successful?

You will be able to access the programme from your dashboard on the day it goes live.

Is there a cost to take part?

No! This is a completely free programme for young people and schools to take part in.

Will I receive a certificate on completion of the programme?

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.

How can I enter a career in health and social care?

The health and social care sector has lots of different roles, and with it, lots of pathways that you can pursue to find your dream career.

From T-Levels to Apprenticeships, and even Volunteering, there are a lot of opportunities for you to gain an insight into the world of health and care, and take your first steps in your dream career.

What is a T-Level?

T Levels are 2-year courses designed for young people aged between 16-19 years.

They are equivalent to 3 A Levels and have been developed in partnership with employers and education providers. T Levels aim to prepare students for further or higher education, skilled employment, or an apprenticeship.

T Levels include a dual approach of classroom learning and on-the-job experience. The qualification requires a 45-day placement, which could be in one technical setting or a rotation, depending on the course of study.

The T Levels course includes core theory, concepts, skills, and knowledge needed for a career in the chosen sector.

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain‘on the job’ experience, combined with studying for a formal qualification, all while earning a wage.

Apprenticeships can range from 12 months to 5 years, giving you sufficient time to learn new skills and gain knowledge in the area you see yourself in the future. You can do an apprenticeship in a wide range of areas, from healthcare workers, to administrators or radiology.

As an Integrated Care System, we offer rotational apprenticeship schemes that gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills in a range of health and care settings. This will provide experience and competencies that will be beneficial when you are looking for permanent employment or to enable you to progress along your chosen career pathway.

There are lots of different benefits to volunteering. By volunteering, you can:

  • Gain and develop skills, experience, and practical insights
  • Explore different career paths
  • Meet new people
  • Boost confidence
  • Improve emotional wellbeing

We work closely with local partners VAST and Support Staffordshire who provide volunteer brokerage across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. They have a really broad range of volunteering opportunities with local community organisations and within health and care, so will be happy to help find the right role for you.

VAST is a registered charity, providing specialist services to the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire.

Support Staffordshire

Support Staffordshire is the largest independent voice VCSE in Staffordshire.
