Embark on a journey through acute hospital settings with our Virtual Work Experience Programme, in collaboration with Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent ICS. Discover the myriad career opportunities within health care, featuring real-life insights from clinical professionals in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent.

From doctors and nurses to allied health professionals, this on-demand virtual work experience program provides direct access to professionals who have appeared in Channel 5's 999: Critical Condition. Gain valuable knowledge, ask questions, and explore diverse paths in acute healthcare.

What's included

Throughout the on-demand programme you will be provided with access to real-life clinical professionals working in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. From doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and more, there's something for everyone. You'll hear directly from healthcare professionals who've appeared in Channel 5's 999: Critical Condition via pre-recorded webinars where they answered questions from local students.

Introduction to the NHS and Acute Hospitals

Have you ever wondered what working in a hospital is actually like? This introductory module will help you understand about the NHS and acute hospitals. It will explain how the NHS is structured and provide an overview of an acute hospitals services. You will gain insight and hear from our partners UHNM (University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust) and the Haywood Hospital.

Doctors and Surgeons

This module will showcase the work of doctors and surgeons, giving you an insight into the variety of roles available within acute settings! If you’re interested in medicine and how to help patients in acute settings, this module will provide you with everything you need to know!

Nursing

This module will introduce you to the world of nursing, giving you an insight into the various roles available so that you can shape your career journey in a way that suits your interests! If you’re interested in nursing but want to consider all areas and options, this is a fantastic starting point for you to help support your future decisions!

Midwifery & Neonatal Care

Midwifery and Neonatal professionals provide vital care during pregnancy, labour and the early postnatal period. This module will introduce you to the essential skills, characteristics, and responsibilities found within midwifery and neonatal care and will show you everything that it takes to succeed!

Allied Health Professions (AHPs)

In this module we will overview the 15 unique health professional roles that use their specialist knowledge and care to patients when they need it most. We’ll take a closer look at some of these roles, including radiography, occupational therapy and dietetics.

Health & Life Sciences

Pharmacy

A career in pharmacy offers the chance to make a positive difference to patient’s lives and wellbeing. A significant presence in any acute hospital, there is more to pharmacy than you realise. In this module we will showcase the different pharmacy roles that operate within a busy hospital, showing you what you need to succeed in this career.

Employability skills

This module highlights the importance of getting career-ready by improving your employability skills. From looking at how to ace interviews and craft your CV to the importance of teamwork and resilience, this module will give you the skills you need to reflect and improve on your own employability skills, making sure you have the tools you need to succeed in a potential future in a hospital setting.

What does the application process involve?

Applying for a place is simple. If you’re applying as an individual student, you’ll need to provide your full name and email address, set up a password, confirm you’re over the age of 13 and agree to our terms and conditions.

When will I hear if my application has been successful?

You will be able to access the programme from your dashboard on the day it goes live.

Is there a cost to take part?

No! This is a completely free programme for young people and schools to take part in.

Will I receive a certificate on completion of the programme?

You will receive a certificate on completion of your programme. It will be made available to download whenever your programme is marked as complete.

How can I enter a career in health and social care?

The health and social care sector has lots of different roles, and with it, lots of pathways that you can pursue to find your dream career.

From T-Levels to Apprenticeships, and even Volunteering, there are a lot of opportunities for you to gain an insight into the world of health and care, and take your first steps in your dream career.

What is a T-Level?

T Levels are 2-year courses designed for young people aged between 16-19 years.

They are equivalent to 3 A Levels and have been developed in partnership with employers and education providers. T Levels aim to prepare students for further or higher education, skilled employment, or an apprenticeship.

T Levels include a dual approach of classroom learning and on-the-job experience. The qualification requires a 45-day placement, which could be in one technical setting or a rotation, depending on the course of study.

The T Levels course includes core theory, concepts, skills, and knowledge needed for a career in the chosen sector.

What is an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are a great way to gain‘on the job’ experience, combined with studying for a formal qualification, all while earning a wage.

Apprenticeships can range from 12 months to 5 years, giving you sufficient time to learn new skills and gain knowledge in the area you see yourself in the future. You can do an apprenticeship in a wide range of areas, from healthcare workers, to administrators or radiology.

As an Integrated Care System, we offer rotational apprenticeship schemes that gives you the opportunity to enhance your skills in a range of health and care settings. This will provide experience and competencies that will be beneficial when you are looking for permanent employment or to enable you to progress along your chosen career pathway.

Why is volunteering beneficial?

There are lots of different benefits to volunteering. By volunteering, you can:

  • Gain and develop skills, experience, and practical insights
  • Explore different career paths
  • Meet new people
  • Boost confidence
  • Improve emotional wellbeing

We work closely with local partners VAST and Support Staffordshire who provide volunteer brokerage across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. They have a really broad range of volunteering opportunities with local community organisations and within health and care, so will be happy to help find the right role for you.

VAST is a registered charity, providing specialist services to the Voluntary, Community and Social Enterprise (VCSE) Sector in Stoke on Trent and North Staffordshire.

Support Staffordshire

Support Staffordshire is the largest independent voice VCSE in Staffordshire.
